St Mary's flooring
St Mary’s church has beautiful Victorian nave floors but sadly much of the floor has cracked, or there are loose and broken tiles.
In 2015 St Mary’s was put on the ‘Heritage at risk register’ by Historic England. They said the Totnes church’s condition was poor.
As part of the St Mary’s Church Reordering project we intend to level and repair the whole of the nave floor.
Our Victorian Pews are fixed on raised wooden platforms. The carved bench ends in the central aisle are early work of the famous Devon woodcarver Harry Hems. To make the nave more flexible we will level the floor. Pews at the back of the church and to the sides will be replaced with flexible seating but all the carved bench ends will be retained or relocated in the front block. Some of the remaining pews will also be made mobile. This will mean the community can use the space for more events and other uses.
