Get to know St Mary's: The Organ
St Mary’s organ is pretty eye catching don’t you think? The basis for this organ was built by Father Henry Willis for the Great Exhibition in 1851.
"Father" Willis, was an English organ player and builder. He is regarded as the foremost organ builder of the Victorian era.
The Great Exhibition, this organ was shown at, was the first international exhibition of Manufactured Products. So parts of the organ are more than 170 years old.
St Mary’s acquired the organ in 1861. The organ has been restored and enlarged since then and is an important part of the historic church.
Above the organ you may be able to spot three coats of arts. There’s the Borough arms, King Charles I coat of arms and the Royal Rose.
